Biden urges governors to put pressure on House over security bill |
President Biden is enlisting the nation's governors to help get a national security bill through Congress, as it remains mired in political red tape with the Republican-controlled House. Border security is a main component of the bipartisan proposal, which also includes funding to aid Ukraine's defense against Russia and Israel's war against Hamas. "Congress has had a long, proud bipartisan history on immigration reform and abiding by our international treaty obligations, which we've signed, related to immigration. These reforms made America a nation of laws, a nation of immigrants, and the strongest economy in the world," he said during an address during the National Governors Association's winter meeting. "Over time, our laws and our resources haven't kept up with our immigration system, and it's broken. And our politics has failed to fix it." House Republican leaders have so far blocked the proposal from moving forward. "The House of Representatives must pass the bipartisan national security deal," Biden told the bipartisan gathering of state leaders. "The Speaker gave the House a two-week vacation. They have to come back." Biden said he's exploring his options for executive orders to address the massive influx of migrants on the U.S. southern border. He also told attendees that his administration has authorized more than 500 new sanctions targeting Russia as the country's war against Ukraine hits the two-year mark and in the wake of news of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny's death in an Arctic prison last week. |

CPAC draws Republican VIPs, possible Trump running mates
|
South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem (R) and Reps. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.), Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) and Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) headlined Friday's portion of the Conservative Political Action Committee annual meeting. The group, which is heavily favoring former President Trump's reelection bid, is meeting in National Harbor, Md., through the weekend. Trump is slated to address the crowd on Saturday. Noem, who is thought to be among the front-runners for Trump's running mate, delivered an especially blistering rebuke of the federal government. "Nobody turns to D.C. for the solutions. Nothing meaningful gets accomplished here. It is governors who have had to lead, and I have seen governors make bad decisions and devastate their states, and we have seen governors who did the right thing," she said. The Hill will have live updates throughout the event. |

The final (S.C.) countdown: Trump, Haley face off Saturday
|
Former President Trump and his GOP presidential nomination rival Nikki Haley continued to ramp up their attacks against each other Friday on the eve of the South Carolina primary.
Trump is holding a rally in Rock Hill, a suburb of Charlotte, N.C., located just outside South Carolina. During an interview on the conservative South Carolina-based "Charlie James Show," Trump accused his one-time ambassador to the United Nations of having "an ego or something." "I'm not a big fan of hers,' Trump said ahead of Friday's event.
Haley, meanwhile, has repeatedly knocked Trump's general election viability. "All he does is talk about himself," Haley said during a recent event in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The latest analysis from The Hill / Decision Desk HQ has Trump with a 30.7 percent lead in South Carolina based on 36 polls. Haley and her team have dismissed the concerns about her home state outcome. "We know that the math is challenging," Haley campaign manager Betsy Ankney told reporters Friday. "This has never just been about who can win a Republican primary. This battle is about who can win in November, defeat the Democrats and finally get our country back on track." |

Dread hangs over budget negotiations, prompting shutdown fears
|
New day, new funding deadline. It's the seemingly perennial story of Congress, and it's coming back around with March 1 and March 8 as the latest expiration dates for federal funding. Leaders in both parties are again trying to hash out a deal ahead of the latest deadlines, but the fears of a shutdown are growing more pronounced. The Hill's dynamic trio Mike Lillis, Mychael Schnell and Al Weaver have the full breakdown on the situation. "Of all the scares we've had since the last fiscal year, I think this is going to be the scariest. I think we could be in a world of hurt," a GOP aide told The Hill. "I don't know if it'll be a partial or a full, but I think the chances of a shutdown are the highest we've had this fiscal year."
