The ascension of Kamala Harris to the top of the Democratic ticket has bolstered the party's chances of keeping control of the White House for another four years, but the effect on House races is much less clear.
Since replacing President Biden as the Democrats' likely nominee, the vice president has delivered a bolt of energy to a deflated base, sparking a boost in grassroots enthusiasm, a spike in campaign fundraising and fresh hopes that Democrats can keep former President Trump from a second term. |

Vice President Harris is tasked with keeping her momentum going as she heads to the Democratic National Convention next week, eager to re-introduce herself to the American public. Her one-month-long candidacy has rejuvenated the party in ways President Biden struggled to do, but she will also be faced with mapping out what a Harris presidency will look like and selling herself with a fresh agenda. |

A rematch in Washington state is shaping up to be one of the key races to determine who controls the House in November, as first-term incumbent Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (D-Wash.) faces off for a second time against Trump-backed Republican Joe Kent in a district that went for the former president in 2020. Gluesenkamp Perez pulled off an upset in the midterms when she defeated Kent and flipped Washington's red-leaning 3rd Congressional District. Now, she's looking to fend off a challenge from Kent as her party fights to win the lower chamber. |

Key primary races will kick off in Alaska, Florida and Wyoming next week as the 2024 primary cycle wraps up.
In Florida, a noteworthy Senate race is about to be solidified. Meanwhile, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R) battles a challenger backed by his political nemesis, former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R), while Democrats duke it out in the state's 13th Congressional District to challenge Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R) in the fall. |

Former President Trump campaigned in the battleground state of Pennsylvania on Saturday and went after Vice President Harris's physical appearance as his Republican allies have pushed him to instead focus on the policy differences with his political opponent. "I am much better looking than her," Trump told supporters at a rally in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. "I'm a better-looking person than Kamala." |

A surge in COVID-19 infections has swept the country this summer, upending travel plans and bringing fevers, coughs and general malaise. It shows no immediate sign of slowing. While most of the country and the federal government has put the pandemic in the rearview mirror, the virus is mutating and new variants emerging. |

The fallout over the Supreme Court's presidential immunity decision will crescendo next month, with judges in two of former President Trump's four criminal cases set to tackle the implications. On Sept. 5, U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan will weigh how Trump's federal indictment accusing him of conspiring to subvert the 2020 election should proceed. |

Republican pollster Frank Luntz said that former President Trump is driving the gender gap among 2024 election voters with insults toward his political opponents. CNN's anchor Michael Smerconish presented a recent Fox News poll showing a 22-point gender gap between males and females, where men favored Trump by 12, while women favored Vice President Kamala Harris by 10. |

U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) said Friday that migrant encounters along the southwest border last month dipped to the lowest level in four years. "In July, the Border Patrol recorded 56,408 encounters between ports of entry along the southwest border," CBP said in a press release. "This is the lowest monthly total since September 2020." |

OPINION | In March 2008, presidential candidate Barack Obama's "A More Perfect Union" speech spelled out, clearly and thoroughly, his thoughts on race and what America should do going forward. In the speech, Obama seemed to take no sides. With cognitive and affective empathy, Obama gave generous explanations for conservatives and liberal behavior, alike, an apologia for everyone regardless of race and positionality. No one was blamed; everyone was praised, at least for their potential to be good citizens. |
OPINION | This week, former President Trump falsely claimed that images of a recent Harris campaign rally were fabricated by artificial intelligence — the first clear instance of a major American candidate sewing deepfake uncertainty. Trump's comments come on the back of an increasing tempo of deepfake deception, including someone's ham-handed attempt to use generated audio of President Biden to sway the New Hampshire primary and a perhaps more impactful use of deepfakes to influence Slovakia's October election. Meanwhile, xAI is rolling out an astounding new model that enables remarkably realistic, unfiltered imagery. |
