News Alert

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan says unofficial results show voters approve a referendum that would cement his grip on the country.

The referendum is designed to assign Erdogan sweeping powers. Term limits for the presidency would be reset and, if he wins elections in 2019 and 2024, he could be in power until 2029.

With more than 99% of the ballots counted, the yes vote was ahead, according to the state-run Anadolu Agency. Results show 51.21% of Turks are in favor of giving Erdogan more power and 48.79% are opposed. The Turkish Election Commission has not yet released official results.

Erdogan’s opponents vigorously contest the unofficial results after the country’s High Electoral Board changed course during voting on whether it would accept unstamped ballots.
