Convicted killer and former NFL star Aaron Hernandez tried to block the door of his cell before hanging himself with a bed sheet he attached to a window, authorities said.
The former New England Patriots tight end was alone in his cell in the general population wing when he killed himself, according to a statement from the Massachusetts Department of Correction.
Hernandez, 27, was serving a life sentence after being convicted of first-degree murder for the June 2013 killing of Odin Lloyd, a semi-pro football player who was dating the sister of Hernandez’s fiancée.
Last week, Hernandez was acquitted of two counts of murder stemming from a 2012 shooting, though he was convicted of illegal possession of a firearm.
Hernandez's death comes as his former team is scheduled to visit President Donald Trump at the White House at 2:30 p.m. ET to celebrate its February Super Bowl victory. Watch the visit on CNN.
