The Supreme Court has struck down a long-standing New York law that restricted carrying a concealed handgun outside the home — the justices' first major opinion on Second Amendment rights in more than a decade. The 6-3 decision to upend New York's law will likely create a ripple effect on restrictions in more than a half dozen other states with similar gun laws. The ruling broke along ideological lines, with the court's six conservatives joining a majority opinion by Justice Clarence Thomas, who wrote that the Second Amendment protects "an individual's right to carry a handgun for self-defense outside the home." "We know of no other constitutional right that an individual may exercise only after demonstrating to government officers some special need," Thomas wrote for the majority. President Biden swiftly condemned the ruling, noting recent mass shootings in New York and Texas. "This ruling contradicts both common sense and the Constitution, and should deeply trouble us all," Biden argued in a statement. "In the wake of the horrific attacks in Buffalo (N.Y.) and Uvalde (Texas), as well as the daily acts of gun violence that do not make national headlines, we must do more as a society — not less — to protect our fellow Americans."
