Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has outlined several legislative proposals House Democrats are weighing as responses to the Supreme Court's Friday ruling overturning Roe v. Wade, the 1973 decision that established a constitutional right to abortion. In a letter to her Democratic colleagues, Pelosi said the party has been bracing for the high court's action since a draft ruling leaked last month. One proposal would codify the 1973 Roe decision into law. Another would make clear that women are free to travel across the country for any reason — an effort to preempt any attempts by states to prohibit cross-state travel in pursuit of legal abortion services.
