The Supreme Court is set to cap a monumental term this week, as Justices break until their October term. With more opinions expected to possibly come down Thursday, the conservative-dominated court will have touched on guns, religious freedom, climate change, new Congressional maps in states and — most notably — abortion, upending the decades-long standing that protected abortion access through the landmark Roe v. Wade case. Changing faces: Justice Stephen Breyer's previously announced retirement from the Court takes effect at noon, concluding a nearly 28-year career on the bench. Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson will be sworn in upon Breyer's departure, officially making her the nation's first Black woman to serve in the role and pushing her into a court decidedly split and in turmoil. It's easily been one of the most consequential terms the High Court has seen in decades with the 6-3 conservative majority not just ruling on Mississippi's 15-week abortion ban at issue in the case but also tossing the long-standing Roe v. Wade, immediately outlawing abortions in several states and triggering abolition in others. The court also expanded gun rights for the first time in more than a decade by tossing a New York concealed carry law. The two biggest cases outstanding — West Virginia v. EPA and Biden v. Texas — also could have major impacts on environmental regulations and immigration, respectively. Read all the latest Supreme Court news via The Hill here. |
