McDaniel, Dhillon prep for leadership showdown
Republicans will gather in Southern California on Friday for their first major meeting since a disappointing midterm election cycle, and they're set to decide whether Ronna McDaniel should get another term as chairwoman of the Republican National Committee (RNC) or if the GOP should go in another direction. Both McDaniel and chief rival Harmeet Dhillon have lined up support from top members of the party. This week, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) signaled his support for Dhillon, who was a legal adviser to former President Trump. Meanwhile, Sen. Rick Scott, the Florida Republican who previously was the state's governor, tweeted his backing for McDaniel on Thursday. Both DeSantis and Scott have sparked speculation about bids for the 2024 presidential nomination, though Scott ultimately announced this week that he'll seek reelection to the Senate next year. RNC members will select the GOP leader in a secret ballot. McDaniel says she's secured support from the majority of the voters while her rival's allies have said some members have privately signaled their support for Dhillon. MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell is also running for the position and is seeking to pick off members for his long-shot bid. |

🗳️ California's 2024 Senate race taking shape
It's getting hot in California — at least as far as the 2024 Senate race goes. Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) hasn't said whether she'll seek reelection but the 89-year-old former San Francisco mayor already has high-profile Democrats vying for her seat. The latest: Rep. Adam Schiff, the California Democrat who chaired the Intelligence Committee when Democrats held control of the House, has announced a bid for the Senate seat. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) has refused to seat Schiff on the House panel in the current term. Rep. Katie Porter (D-Calif.) also has launched a Senate bid and others are thought to be considering running for the seat, including Reps. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.) and Ro Khanna (D-Calif.). |

🤝 Biden: 'Ready' to work with GOP but debt default isn't an option
President Biden says the possibility that the federal government could default on its debt is "mind-boggling" but he's still not ready to make a deal with Republican lawmakers seeking spending cuts in exchange for a debt ceiling increase. "If Republicans want to work together on real solutions and continue to grow manufacturing jobs, build the strongest economy in the world and make sure Americans are paid a fair wage, I'm ready," Biden said during an economic address in Virginia. "But I will not let anyone use the full faith and credit of the United States as a bargaining chip." |

📺 Recap: The Hill explores vaccine rates among adults
Vaccine hesitancy has been on the rise but experts say there are many benefits to getting inoculated against potentially dangerous diseases. The Hill's editor-in-chief Bob Cusack chatted with top leaders on vaccinations on Thursday to get their insight and a look at what's on the horizon. Rep. Brad Wenstrup (R-Ohio), who is a doctor, said that costs of transplants and hospital stays should be considered versus the relatively low price of vaccines. "If you can prevent something, you save a whole lot more," said Wenstrup, who is part of the GOP Doctors Caucus. Rep. Terri Sewell (D-Ala.), a member of the Black Maternal Health Caucus, plans to again introduce legislation that aims to address maternal vaccination rates.
