Former President Trump's civil trial rail over his business practices in New York City, where he built his business brand and won international fame, seems to have struck a nerve. Trump, the front-runner for the GOP's presidential nomination next year, is facing charges in Washington, D.C., for his attempts to remain in power after losing the 2020 election; in Georgia for attempting to overturn the state's 2020 election results; in New York for an alleged hush money scheme to keep an affair quiet; and in Florida for his retention and handling of classified materials after leaving the White House. |

President Biden, already facing dismal approval numbers and multiple liberals looking to replace him, got more unwelcome news this week with the entry of Jill Stein into the 2024 race. Stein, who announced on Thursday that she would seek the Green Party nomination for the second time, is considered a fringe and intrusive figure to many Democrats who think she played spoiler to Hillary Clinton's White House campaign against Donald Trump. |

Democrats are raising concerns that President Biden's standing among young voters is in jeopardy after polling released this week showed Biden effectively tied with former President Trump among young voters. A New York Times/Siena College survey released Monday showed Biden virtually tied with Trump among voters younger than 30, with 30 percent backing Biden and 29 percent backing Trump. Thirty-four percent said they backed independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. |

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) rolled out a two-step government funding stopgap bill on Saturday, settling on an unusual approach to avert a government shutdown that is already getting pushback from Republicans with just days until a Friday funding deadline. The "laddered" continuing resolution (CR) released Saturday would have some funding run out on Jan. 19, and the rest of the funding on Feb. 2 — an approach intended to discourage negotiation of a whole-of-government omnibus funding bill and to encourage the House and Senate to negotiate on the 12 regular funding bills. |

For many of Trump's primary rivals, the case against nominating the former president was straightforward: He could not defeat President Biden in a general election, when more moderate and independent voters are needed to prevail in key battleground states. But recent polling has dealt a blow to that argument. |

Tensions between Vivek Ramaswamy and Ronna McDaniel, chair of the Republican National Committee (RNC), have been on full display since the GOP presidential candidate called out his party as a "party of losers" on the RNC's third debate stage Wednesday. The infighting comes after Republicans lost several key races in Tuesday's elections — and as the RNC has raised the requirements for the fourth debate next month. |

The White House reacted to House Speaker Mike Johnson's (R-La.) new stopgap funding bill Saturday, calling it "extreme." "This proposal is just a recipe for more Republican chaos and more shutdowns—full stop," a statement from White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre read. "With just days left before an Extreme Republican Shutdown—and after shutting down Congress for three weeks after they ousted their own leader—House Republicans are wasting precious time with an unserious proposal that has been panned by members of both parties." |

Political analyst Larry Sabato criticized Speaker Mike Johnson's (R-La.) two-tier stop-gap government funding bill as a "disaster" on Saturday, after days of internal negotiations over the best way to fund the government. "It's a disaster. Everybody knows it's a disaster," Sabato said in a CNN interview Saturday. "Even if it passes the House, which is hardly assured — there will be all kinds of plans and objections and the rest of it — the Senate isn't going to go along with this and the President isn't going to go along with this." |

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Saturday that Israel would not support a Palestinian Authority-led government in Gaza after it completes a war to eliminate Hamas in the territory, going against pressure from the U.S. The Biden administration has repeatedly emphasized that Israel must not "reoccupy" Gaza at the end of the conflict, with Secretary of State Antony Blinken saying this week that the Palestinian Authority — which operates the West Bank government — should take control. |

Eric Trump said his father, former President Trump, is in a better position to win the next presidential election than he was in previous years in Saturday comments. "He is, Brian," Trump responded to Fox News anchor Brian Kilmeade's question about whether former President Trump is in a "better position now," Trump despite facing a slew of legal battles. |

OPINION | What if you could get in legal trouble simply because you knew somebody else who got in trouble? You didn't do anything wrong with them. Or tell them to do anything wrong. Or even know that they were going to do something wrong and fail to tell others. But, theoretically, you could have stopped them if you had known. It seems ludicrous, and yet that is what federal labor regulators want to do to American businesses nationwide with a new policy called "reserve control." |

OPINION | As we celebrate Veterans Day this year during the 50th anniversary of America's all-volunteer force, growing concerns about the federal debt, a looming budget impasse and a crisis in military recruiting prompt us to call attention to the causes and consequences of the immense growth in the budget for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs in recent years. |
