Border deal: Here's who's against it so far
|
The long-negotiated border deal, packaged with funding for Ukraine, Israel, the Indo-Pacific and more, needs support from 60 senators in a procedural vote Wednesday to move forward. So far, 19 senators in the 100-member chamber have said they'll oppose it, including 17 Republicans, according to The Hill's running whip list. The bill could hit the threshold needed to get to the Senate floor. But the number of Republicans who've come out against it so far casts doubt on whether Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell's (R-Ky.) early goal of getting at least half the GOP conference (or around 25 senators) on board will shake out. The bill text came out Sunday night, and some senators say they're still pouring over the 370-page package. Click here for the bill's border policy highlights. Lackluster GOP support in the upper chamber could mean less pressure on House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) to take up the bill. He and other House Republican leaders issued a joint statement urging senators to reject the bill, declaring it "DEAD on arrival in the House." Here's who's come out against the supplemental package in the Senate so far: GOP 'no' votes - Marsha Blackburn (Tenn.)
- Mike Braun (Ind.)
- Katie Britt (Ala.)
- Tom Cotton (Ark.)
- Ted Cruz (Texas)
- Steve Daines (Mont.)
- Bill Hagerty (Tenn.)
- Josh Hawley (Mo.)
- Ron Johnson (Wis.)
- Mike Lee (Utah)
- Roger Marshall (Kan.)
- Rand Paul (Ky.)
- Marco Rubio (Fla.)
- Rick Scott (Fla.)
- Eric Schmitt (Mo.)
- Tommy Tuberville (Ala.)
- JD Vance (Ohio)
Democratic 'no' votes - Bob Menendez (N.J.)
- Alex Padilla (Calif.)

UN announces review of UNRWA neutrality policy |
The United Nations has appointed an independent review group to assess how the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) is ensuring its neutrality policy is upheld after 12 staffers were accused of participating in Hamas' Oct. 7 attack on Israel. The final report is expected in April. The U.S. and several other nations cut funding to UNRWA, which provides humanitarian aid to Palestinian refugees, amid the allegations, with the State Department saying the U.S. will redirect funds to other partners in Gaza. The U.N. Office of Internal Oversight Services is conducting a separate investigation into the allegations against the 12 staffers. |

Haley campaign: Nevada 'rigged for Trump' |
Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley's campaign accused Nevada's nomination process of being "rigged for Trump," adding that the state "is not and has never been our focus" one day before Nevada's Republican primary — which will feature Haley's name on the ballot but not former President Trump's. Trump is running in the party-led caucuses on Thursday and is thus the only major GOP candidate eligible for the state's 26 delegates. The primary is being held due to a new state law, but the Nevada GOP chose to conduct caucuses as well. Candidates had to pick which to run in. |

Conway suggests Trump tap person of color for VP pick
|
Kellyanne Conway, former senior adviser to former President Trump, wrote in an op-ed that Trump should pick a person of color as his running mate if he wins the GOP nomination. "Not for identity politics a la the Democrats," Conway wrote in The New York Times, "but as an equal helping to lead an America First movement that includes more union workers, independents, first-time voters, veterans, Hispanics, Asian Americans and African Americans." See some of the names she floated. |
