Trump trips on healthcare over abortion, ObamaCare | © Matt Slocum, Associated Press |
Former President Trump stumbled on health care during his debate against Vice President Harris, delivering vague and sometimes conflicting answers on abortion and his plans for the Affordable Care Act (ACA). The performance illustrated how the ACA, also known as ObamaCare, in particular has haunted Trump. It also put his shifting stances on abortion — one of the critical issues in the race — under an even hotter spotlight. |

The country of Georgia is headed to a pivotal election at the end of October, a contest the U.S. and pro-democracy forces see as the last chance to stand up to aspiring autocrats inspired by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The ruling Georgian Dream (GD) party's billionaire founder and de-facto leader Bidzina Ivanishvili is viewed as employing Putin's playbook to stifle dissent, consolidate power and jeopardize Georgia's ascension to the European Union. | |

California is seeking to crack down on sometimes-toxic hemp products containing THC, sparking ire from an industry that has for years operated with little scrutiny. Last week, Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) proposed emergency regulations that would require all such consumable items to be free of any detectable THC, with the goal of protecting children from dangerous impacts. The rules, which would be among the strongest restrictions on the hemp industry in any state, would also restrict the purchasing age for hemp to 21 years old. |

Republicans are feeling better and better about their chances of knocking off Sen. Jon Tester (D) in Montana's hotly contested Senate race, which would greatly increase their chances of winning back the chamber next year. Several recent polls have shown Republican businessman Tim Sheehy leading Tester by a few points, within the margin of error but not what Democrats are hoping for in a state seen as critical to their chances of keeping Senate control. |

The presidential race is tightening in North Carolina and Georgia, with both now firmly seen as swing states by both parties — a huge turnaround from before Vice President Harris joined the race. With President Biden in the race against former President Trump, Georgia, a state Biden won four years ago, looked out of reach. In North Carolina, a state Democrats have won in the presidential race only twice in the past 50 years, the odds seemed even longer. |

The Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruled on Friday that mail-in ballots with incorrect dates will not be counted in November, reversing a previous ruling from a lower court in the battleground state. Former President Trump's niece, Mary Trump, said she thinks her uncle knows he lost the presidential debate earlier this week because winners don't turn down the opportunity to "win again." Mary Trump joined MSNBC's Alex Witt on Saturday to discuss Tuesday's debate between Trump and Vice President Harris. |

OPINION | Make no mistake, the chaos of our last presidential transition was bad — one impeachment and two criminal cases bad. And yet, we are now two months away from a transition to either Trump Two or Harris One. |
OPINION | On style, Kamala Harris won her first debate with Donald Trump. She exceeded the low expectations that had been set for her, and she prepared sufficiently well to not have a meltdown like Joe Biden's in June. But she failed to achieve four strategic goals to advance her candidacy with independent and undecided voters. |
