Via The Hill’s Brett Samuels, Vice President Pence will continue to work from the White House after his press secretary Katie Miller tested positive for the coronavirus. https://bit.ly/2xQUqLh

From Pence spokesman Devin O’Malley: "Vice President Pence will continue to follow the advice of the White House Medical Unit and is not in quarantine. Additionally, Vice President Pence has tested negative every single day and plans to be at the White House tomorrow.”

Keep in mind: Katie Miller sat in at least one White House coronavirus task force meeting last week.

Self-quarantining: Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Administrator Stephen Hahn and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Director Robert Redfield are both self-quarantining. Anthony Fauci, the top infectious diseases expert at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), will do a “modified” self-quarantine.

Tidbit: Katie Miller is married to senior White House adviser Stephen Miller.

HAPPENING TOMORROW:

Redfield, Hahn, Fauci and the assistant secretary for health at the Department of Health and Human Services Brett Giroir are all testifying before the Senate Health Committee by video conference. https://cnn.it/2WNqisG

NEWS THIS MORNING

I hope Frank Costanza can rest peacefully in Boca:

Actor and comedian Jerry Stiller has died at the age of 92, his son Ben Stiller announced this morning on Twitter.

Ben Stiller tweeted

Stiller’s most famous roles: “Jerry Stiller was known for his role as Frank Costanza in the show ‘Seinfeld’ and about a decade later, as Arthur Spooner in the sitcom, ‘The King of Queens.’ " https://cnn.it/2YP80tT

IN THE WHITE HOUSE

No better way to spend Mother’s Day, amirite?:

President Trump repeatedly slammed former President Barack Obama on Twitter yesterday. https://bit.ly/2YT78UQ

A phrase Trump has been using: “OBAMAGATE!” https://bit.ly/2SWJoLR

WHAT SPARKED TRUMP’S TWEETS:

Via Yahoo News’s Michael Isikoff, in a private call with former aides, former President Obama expressed his unease of the Justice Department dropping charges against Trump’s former national security adviser Michael Flynn

In Obama’s words “The news over the last 24 hours I think has been somewhat downplayed — about the Justice Department dropping charges against Michael Flynn…And the fact that there is no precedent that anybody can find for someone who has been charged with perjury just getting off scot-free. That’s the kind of stuff where you begin to get worried that basic — not just institutional norms — but our basic understanding of rule of law is at risk. And when you start moving in those directions, it can accelerate pretty quickly as we’ve seen in other places.” https://yhoo.it/2YT8KhF

IN CONGRESS

Now, time to work on that backlog:

Via The Hill’s Jordain Carney, the Senate is in Washington, D.C., this week working to reauthorize the expired surveillance programs from March. https://bit.ly/3fI988K

WHAT ELSE IS HAPPENING IN THE SENATE THIS WEEK:

Coronavirus: “While the Senate is debating the intelligence programs on the floor, lawmakers are expected to continue to discuss the implementation of the nearly $3 trillion already allocated by Congress for the virus and potential next steps.”

Nominations: “Before the Senate takes up the surveillance bill [Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.)] has teed up votes on two nominations: Brian Montgomery to be deputy secretary of Housing and Urban Development and Troy Edgar’s nomination to be the chief financial officer at the Department of Homeland Security. The Senate will hold an initial vote on Montgomery’s nomination on Monday evening.”

Lamar Alexander is self-quarantining:

Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) will self-quarantine for 14 days after a staff member tested positive for COVID-19. https://bit.ly/2zsL9JQ

From Alexander's chief of staff David Cleary: "After discussing this with the Senate’s attending physician, Senator Alexander, out of an abundance of caution, has decided not to return to Washington, D.C., and will self-quarantine in Tennessee for 14 days.”

HOW REPUBLICAN SENATORS ARE WORRIED THAT TRUMP’S HANDLING OF THE VIRUS COULD COST THEM THEIR MAJORITY:

ON THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL

Abracadabra — a staffer here and a staffer there!:

Via The Hill’s Jonathan Easley, “Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden’s campaign has gone on a hiring spree, addressing concerns from some in his party who say it has been slow to staff key positions on the digital side and in battleground states ahead of the November general election against President Trump.” https://bit.ly/35MPxj5

New hires:

“Caitlin Mitchell, the chief mobilization officer for Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s (D-Mass.) now-ended presidential campaign, to scale up the former vice president's digital operations.”

Andrew Gauthier, a veteran of Sen. Kamala Harris’s (D-Calif.) suspended presidential campaign and former BuzzFeed video chief, to create new content.”

Robyn Kanner, who worked on former Rep. Beto O’Rourke’s (D-Texas) unsuccessful presidential campaign, is helping to design a new website for Biden, among other ‘visual brand operations.’”

And it doesn’t stop there: “Rob Flaherty, the digital director for the Biden campaign, said his team will double in size in the coming weeks.”
