Parisian authorities raided X's French offices Tuesday as part of an investigation launched last year into the platform that has since expanded to cover its AI chatbot Grok, which is facing a growing number of probes in various jurisdictions.
Meanwhile, the Department of Justice (DOJ) released a new tranche of documents related to Epstein on Friday that became a headache for Musk, who appeared to exchange emails with the convicted sex offender about visiting his island.
This comes as Musk gears up for a busy year, in which he is widely expected to take SpaceX public and has signaled a renewed interest in politics ahead of the midterm elections.
"With Musk, investors have just gotten used to controversies," said Dan Ives, global head of technology research at Wedbush Securities. However, he added, "Musk needs to make sure that these controversies don't become third rail issues."
The Paris prosecutor's office revealed early Tuesday that its cybercrime unit was executing a search warrant on X's French offices and summoning Musk and former X CEO Linda Yaccarino for interviews in April.
The investigation, which was opened in January 2025, initially focused on the platform's algorithm but has since expanded to cover Grok and concerns about sexual deepfakes and Holocaust denial. The AI chatbot is integrated into X, which was acquired by Musk's AI company, xAI, in March.
French authorities are probing X for being complicit in the possession and distribution of child pornography, defamation, denial of crimes against humanity and falsification of the operation of an automated data processing system, among other potential offenses, according to a press release.
X has dismissed the allegations underlying the investigation as "baseless" and called Tuesday's raid an "abusive act of law enforcement theater designed to achieve illegitimate political objectives."
