Trump posts, deletes video depicting Obamas as apes: |
President Trump shared a video late Thursday depicting former President Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama as apes, sparking outrage from both Republicans and Democrats. What was the video?: The now-deleted video focused on unsubstantiated voting fraud claims from 2020. In the last few seconds, the video flashes to a scene with the Obamas' heads superimposed on primates' bodies with a song from "The Lion King." The White House's defense: The White House defended the video as a meme related to "The Lion King" in which Trump is king of the jungle and Democrats are various animals. A senior White House official The Hill later Friday that a staffer posted the video "erroneously" and "it has now been taken down." Reaction from the Capitol: Democrats immediately criticized the video as racist. Even some Republicans have spoken out today. GOP Sen. Tim Scott (S.C.), the first Black senator from his state, said he is "praying it was fake because it's the most racist thing I've seen out of this White House. The President should remove it." And Rep. Mike Lawler (R-N.Y.) called it "wrong and incredibly offensive —whether intentional or a mistake." Lawler said it "should be deleted immediately with an apology offered." 💬 Follow today's live blog |

One of the biggest weekends in sports kicks off this afternoon with the 2026 Winter Olympic opening ceremony in Italy. And then on Sunday, the New England Patriots will face the Seattle Seahawks at Super Bowl LX. Notably, President Trump will not attend either one. Sitting U.S. presidents don't often attend the Olympics or the Super Bowl, but Trump has prioritized attending big sporting events during his second term. In just the past year, Trump attended the Ryder Cup, the FIFA Club World Cup final, multiple UFC fights, the college football national championship, the Daytona 500 and the U.S. Open men's tennis final, just to name a few. More sporting events Trump attended in 2025 Oh, and he became the first sitting U.S. president to attend the Super Bowl last year. The White House says Trump will skip the Santa Clara, Calif., Super Bowl because it's "too far away." But there's more to it than that. Anti-MAGA performers Bad Bunny and Green Day will be performing. And a California stadium full of Seattle and New England fans might not welcome his presence. As for the Olympics, Trump has sent Vice President Vance, second lady Usha Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and U.S. Ambassador to Italy Tilman Fertitta to lead the U.S. delegation. The first — and last — sitting U.S. president to travel abroad to attend the Olympic Games was former President George W. Bush in 2008. What will Trump be doing during the Super Bowl?: He will attend a Super Bowl party in Palm Beach, Fla. But the 📸 photos and 📹 videos of Vance and Rubio at the games together will certainly stoke 2028 speculation. |
➤ IF I HAD TO READ THIS, THEN SO DO YOU: |
The Athletic published an … uncomfortable story about the Winter Olympics. It's getting posted all over social media feeds and, well, people have a lot to say about it. The headline reads, "Are ski jumpers enhancing their penises to fly further?" 😅 The gist: There are reports that ski jumpers are allegedly injecting their penises with hyaluronic acid to fly farther. The World Anti-Doping Agency will investigate these claims. |

🔎 SEARCH FOR NANCY GUTHRIE |
It's Day 6 of the search: |
84-year-old Nancy Guthrie disappeared from her Tucson, Ariz., house last Saturday. Investigators provided an update on the search. Here's the latest: A new video plea from the family: Camron Guthrie, the brother of "Today" show co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, posted a video pleading to the person who may have abducted their mother. "We haven't heard anything directly. We need you to reach out, and we need a way to communicate with you so we can move forward." 📹 Watch Camron Guthrie's video Are the ransom notes real?: The FBI confirmed it is "aware" of alleged ransom notes, including that they were sent to several media outlets, including TMZ. However, the notes appear to have been sent to media outlets only, not the family. The TMZ ransom note has two deadlines: TMZ founder Harvey Levin gave some insight into the note TMZ received. He described it to CNN's Anderson Cooper as a "carefully crafted letter" with two deadlines: one was Thursday at 5 p.m. "that has to do with the demand" and a second on Monday that "has more to do with a consequence." 📹 Watch Levin describe the note The DNA samples: The sheriff says the blood trail found on Nancy Guthrie's front porch belonged to her. However, investigators are still waiting for the results of more DNA samples. Timeline of events: Her garage door was opened at 9:48 p.m. MST, indicating she returned home. Her garage door closed two minutes later. The doorbell disconnected at 1:47 a.m. A person was detected on a camera at 2:12 a.m. but there's no footage because Nancy Guthrie did not have a subscription. Her pacemaker then disconnected from her phone at 2:28 a.m. The family discovered she was missing around noon. Read more on what we know |
Oh, surprise! Congress is having a hard time negotiating DHS funding: |
"Senators in both parties now expect funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to lapse at the end of next week, as negotiations over Democratic demands for restrictions on Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) fizzle with the GOP," reports The Hill's Alexander Bolton. Keep in mind: DHS funds the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), in addition to the more controversial ICE and CBP agencies. The deadline: DHS funding expires on Feb. 13. Read Bolton's reporting: 'GOP, Democrats expect DHS shutdown after talks fizzle' |
