“We’re going to give this one shot,” Trump told reporters at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland. “I’m in no hurry. Everyone is saying, ‘The midterms, I’m in a hurry.’ I’m in no hurry.”
The statement appeared to contrast with comments made by Trump on Tuesday to lawmakers at the White House’s annual Congressional Picnic, where he said “we’re going to end the war very quickly.”
On Monday, Trump said he would hold off on attacking Iran at the request of leaders from Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates after a U.S. strike was scheduled for Tuesday.
Polls show a growing number of Americans are unhappy with Trump’s handling of the conflict, posing a risk to Republicans as they seek to defend their majorities in Congress.
The conflict in Iran has wreaked havoc on global energy markets, spiking inflation and energy prices in the U.S. The national average for gas prices going into Memorial Day weekend was up to about $4.56 per gallon, according to AAA.
