House sinks Tlaib's Lebanon war powers resolution |
The House sunk Rep. Rashida Tlaib's (D-Mich.) war powers resolution on Tuesday to direct President Trump to remove U.S. troops from hostilities in Lebanon.
|
The resolution failed in a 189-235 vote with two GOP lawmakers backing the resolution, while 22 Democrats opposed the measure.
The measure said that “nothing in this concurrent resolution may be construed to prevent or limit security cooperation with the Lebanese Armed Forces or the protection of diplomatic facilities.”
Last week, the U.S., Israel and Lebanon agreed to a framework that would remove Iran’s influence in Lebanon through its backing of the militant group Hezbollah, which is designated as a terrorist organization by the U.S. government, and pave the way for an Israeli military withdrawal from territory it holds in the south of the country.
“For Lebanon, this Framework provides a genuine pathway out of a long crisis. For Israel, it creates a verifiable path to removing the persistent threat on its northern border,” a statement, which was attributed to all three parties, said.
Last month, the House rejected a different Lebanon war powers measure, which was also introduced by Tlaib, with 117 Democrats voting against the resolution.
