Last night's Grammy ceremony was fun, for the first time in recent memory! My mom was texting me incessantly about Sombr and Lady Gaga's outfits (check out this year's best-dressed stars featuring Chappell Roan's nipple-ring dress), Olivia Dean saved the run of best-new-artists performances, Trevor Noah made a lot of jokes (one of which landed him in hot water with Trump this morning), but nothing made me laugh harder than when Cher presented the record-of-the-year award to my all-time favorite, long-deceased singer Luther Vandross (the real winner was Kendrick Lamar's song "Luther" with SZA). And speaking of those we wish to rest in peace, I'm so glad Lauryn Hill showed up on time to honor D'Angelo during the in memoriam.
But the biggest moment of the night was when Bad Bunny stood up to accept album of the year for Debí Tirar Más Fotos—the first time that a Spanish-language album has taken it home. When his name was called, it was clear that Bad Bunny was overwhelmed by the magnitude of his moment, what it meant for a Puerto Rican artist to win the industry's top award during such a distressing political time. And as soon as that speech was over, I cut the TV off, opened my phone, and was assaulted by what Nicki Minaj had to say about it all... |
