More than 1,200 employees have signed on to the statement, which underscored that the world’s leading AI companies could be close to automating AI research, and warned that development could move beyond human understanding and control.
“To realize AI’s potential, industry, government, and society at large may need the option to buy time to address emerging risks, develop security measures, and strengthen oversight,” the statement said.
“But each company — and country — is under intense competitive pressure not to unilaterally slow that acceleration,” it continued. “And today, the world lacks the technical and governance tools to deliberately pace frontier-wide progress.”
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and co-founder Jack Clark both signed on to the petition, with the company endorsing the effort.
The Claude maker noted its research on “recursive self-improvement” indicated a need for tools to pace development in order for society to prepare.
OpenAI similarly voiced support for the employee-led push, suggesting that AI acceleration of development could eventually become “so high that the world will need to pace the rate of AI advancement.”
“We hope to contribute to work led by the U.S. government, alongside other labs and the open-source community, to develop the tools and mechanisms that could make that possible,” the AI firm wrote in a post on the social platform X.
