President Trump is visiting Michigan today to tout U.S. manufacturing. This is welcome news to Republicans, who desperately want the president to focus on economic accomplishments to help them on the midterm campaign trail.
He’s expected to visit the General Motors Milford Proving Ground.

Trump takes a little breather: |
President Trump is giving the war in Iran “a little bit of room.” That’s according to United Nations ambassador Mike Waltz.
Why?: The U.S. is pulling back on its daily strikes — breaking its 13-day streak of consecutive strikes — to allow for negotiations and to conserve munitions.
Timing: There were reports over the weekend that a major escalation with Iran has advisers worried it will deplete stockpiles of missile interceptors in the Middle East.
OIL PRICES HAVE ALREADY LIKED THAT NEWS:
Oil prices are down nearly 10 percent today after the break in fighting in the Middle East.
HAPPENING ON TUESDAY:
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will stop at the White House this week for the first meeting there since the Iran war began, according to Politico. Netanyahu has reportedly been pushing for this meeting for months and Tuesday’s funeral for the late Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) gave him an opening.
What we know: ‘Netanyahu is finally getting his White House meeting. He may not like what comes with it.’

Republicans are losing their patience for Pete Hegseth: |
“Republican senators say that confidence is waning in Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s leadership of the U.S. armed forces as the war with Iran drags on without an end in sight,” The Hill’s Alexander Bolton reports.
Specifically: The Trump administration’s failure to anticipate the Strait of Hormuz’s prolonged closure and Iran involving Jordan, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.
But there’s a new development that really frustrated the GOP: “The expansion of the conflict in recent days to the Red Sea, where Iranian-backed Houthi militants targeted Saudi oil shipments, is another troubling development that some Republicans think caught the Pentagon off-guard.”

When is a Senate recess not threatened, amirite? |
Senators are racing through their summer to-do list to join House lawmakers in their annual August recess. But Senate conservatives are already threatening to cancel August recess as a tactic to pressure senators to pass President Trump’s controversial voter ID bill.
Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) is leading the charge. And several other conservatives, including Sens. Rick Scott (R-Fla.), Ashley Moody (R-Fla.) and Jim Banks (R-Ind.) agree.
Why all Republicans are not on board: That could hurt Republican senators who are up for reelection. At least three GOP incumbents could benefit from the August recess to campaign and convince their constituents to keep them in office for another six years.
But keep in mind: Even if the Senate stays in session, they’re not likely to pass this bill. The Senate has already voted on this legislation at least five times and hasn’t come close to the 60-vote threshold needed. Remember, no Democrat supports this bill.
I.e.: Color me skeptical that the Senate will actually cancel its recess.

Remember when Pete Buttigieg was separated from his children over an unsubstantiated claim? |
Well, The Washington Post reports today that the Michigan attorney general’s office is investigating how that accusation led to former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg being separated from his 4-year-old twins.
What the Post learned: Officials used a vague, unsubstantiated claim from a person who was later determined to be “mentally unstable” as the basis to separate Buttigieg from his children — and police waited six days *after* yanking Buttigieg from his kids to investigate the claim.
“Child welfare experts who reviewed the documents at The Post’s request said they illuminate a flawed process that was made worse by poor judgment by agencies and a lack of communication among investigators from two states.”
