President Trump has asked the Supreme Court for permission to build his White House ballroom after a panel of federal judges blocked further construction without congressional approval.
The Trump team argues in his emergency appeal that it’s necessary for national security. Trump has pointed to recent shootings near him to make the case this ballroom is necessary to protect the sitting president. 🔎 Read the official request
Keep in mind: This is the first time the battle over the planned 90,000 square-foot ballroom has reached the Supreme Court.
What happens now?: The Supreme Court is in the middle of its summer recess, but this will land on its emergency docket (as is Trump’s mail-in voting executive order). If the justices don’t intervene in the next week, ballroom construction will stop.

Republicans’ latest midterm strategy: Go after democratic socialists: |
“Republicans are increasingly training their fire on democratic socialists and the Democratic Party’s progressive wing as they search for a winning message heading into the midterms, amid President Trump’s low approval ratings and growing voter frustration over the cost of living,” The Hill’s Sudiksha Kochi writes.
How so?: “Republicans argue that recent victories by candidates they describe as ‘“insurgent’” could pull the country too far to the left. They warn that their political opponents would back tax hikes and massive reparations, seize private property and businesses and lead the country to communism — at a time when many Americans are already struggling to make ends meet.”

Two Senate Republicans have lost their primaries. 10 House incumbents — three Republicans and seven Democrats — have also lost their primaries. Here’s the list:

Longtime Washington Post food critic Tom Sietsema wrote a review in NOTUS today about an exclusive and buzzy private club in Washington, called Ned’s Club.
The gist: It’s a work in progress.
Yikes, this anecdote: Sietsema reports that last year, a member ordered a nonalcoholic drink in one of the dining rooms. The member, who had not had a sip of alcohol in years, took a sip and tasted alcohol. When he told his server, she responded, “Oh, well. Nobody’s pregnant, are they?”

A Trump vs. GOP fight happening in public: |
President Trump is publicly pressuring Senate Republicans to pass a House-approved bill to make daylight saving time permanent. But the pressure may be backfiring.
This change would make mornings very dark in some states, so GOP senators in those states oppose this. For example, they argue kids would be forced to wait for school buses in the dark during the winter.
Logistically, how would passing this work?: “Senate GOP sources say the legislation would not be able to pass the upper chamber with unanimous consent and warn that pushing it to the floor under regular order would take up at least a week of the Senate’s time. That’s a big price to pay when there are only a few weeks of legislative session left in the year and a lot of priorities on the agenda, they say.”
