Folks who aren’t even that interested in college football are staying home tonight to watch the matchup between the LSU Tigers and the Ole Miss Rebels. That newfound urge to see which team will come out on top is a likely result of former University of Mississippi coach/local hero Lane Kiffin’s recent defection to rival Louisiana State University, a headline-making job swap that turned him into “the most controversial and among the most fiercely hated coaches in college football,” VF’s Chris Smith noted in his in-depth interview with Kiffin following the dramatic split.
Kiffin’s remarks to Smith did nothing to cool down that contretemps, especially his claims that problematic racial politics at Ole Miss made player recruitment more difficult. It’s worth noting that those alleged issues didn’t appear to faze Ole Miss star quarterback Trinidad Chambliss from signing with the school, and his nationally renowned battles with the NCAA over collegiate player compensation have made him nearly as famous as Kiffin. “I have a financial adviser, I have an agent, I have a marketing agency,” Chambliss told Bomani Jones, which suggests that—like Kiffin, with his seven-year contract worth $91 million—Chambliss is in it to win it, especially today.
