Though three-time Oscar winner Sean Penn is an occasional member of the fourth estate (his 2016 interview with drug lord El Chapo is the stuff of legend), he can be an elusive interview subject. Vanity Fair, however, has had exceptional luck with the One Battle After Another star, speaking with him last September for our Little Gold Men podcast and again yesterday at the Toronto Film Festival. Maybe September is just our lucky month? Penn was at TIFF for the premiere of Black Sunflowers, a documentary on young Ukrainian soldiers directed by Marcus Haney. Penn is an executive producer on the film, and Haney, who also participated in the interview, says Penn is so engaged in the subject matter that he skipped last year’s Academy Awards for a trip to the war-torn country. The 66-year-old might not have worked his schedule too hard though, as “I realized in my 60s that I'm not good in crowds of more than eight,” Penn admits.
