“We have both the capability and responsibility to develop and manage AI for good and ensure that the development of AI is always under human control and serves the well-being of the people,” Xi said in the White House’s Grand Foyer.
Xi was welcomed to the White House on Thursday for the first state visit from a Chinese leader in more than a decade.
Concerns about AI's capabilities loomed large ahead of the meeting between the leaders of the two superpowers, as researchers offered dire warnings about the technology's risks to humanity.
For his part, Trump said he and Xi will discuss AI, which Trump has taken to calling “super intelligence.”
“The decisions we make in these areas today can promote peace and prosperity for decades and decades to come,” he said.
Earlier Thursday, Trump wrote on Truth Social that it would be a “big topic of discussion, but I want to leave it exactly where it is.”
“That is China’s position also. Our guardrail is the DOJ,” Trump wrote, referring to the Department of Justice.
The president has repeatedly said the only guardrail needed is the department, despite many industry officials calling for new safeguards.
